NLF Championships Brings Out Nation’s Best

The NLF Club Lacrosse Championship is designed to be the most competitive lacrosse tournament in the country. From what I’ve seen over the last couple years, it is exactly that.

It’s at this event where we attempt to field our strongest teams, where we go up against the strongest teams of other clubs who are pre-selected as among the nation’s very best.

It has been said that iron sharpens iron. Well, I can say with certainty that every player who attended and played for the duration is sharper mentally and physically. Each player also knows with a far greater level of precision where they stack up nationally, what they need to work on if they too are to be considered among the nation’s elite, or what they need to do to stay among the nation’s elite as the case may be.

This year’s NLF Championship was a test like no other. With the competitive level coupled with the heat, it revealed so much. On a couple occasions, I saw more college coaches on our sidelines than at any other point this summer (and on one occasion, more than at any other point in recent memory).

This was the big one. It was hyped up to be the big one. And in didn’t disappoint.

It’s already been announced that next year’s event will be held at UMASS again.

We can’t wait, and will work hard over the course of the coming calendar to be even more prepared in 2020!

Game of the event: The 2020’s drew a tough schedule on the first day of the NLF Championships. The first game of the day was against a 91 Orange Crush team that people say is one of the best club teams ever assembled. After falling to the aforementioned juggernaut, 91 Orange Crush, The Fighting Clams were matched up against another elite program in the Edge from Canada. The Fighting Clams bounced back with a convincing 13-7 win to prove that they can not only compete with the elite programs on the club circuit, but can beat them as well. John Alfano exploded for three goals and an assist to give his teammates a huge and much needed energy boost. Even a few Defenseman joined in on the scoring. Zach Mickle & Ryan Rahbany Each scored really nice coast to coast goals.

Game of the event: The 2021 Fighting Clams played a defensive masterpiece against the Roughriders holding them off by a final of 4-3. Defenseman, Jimmy Freehill was stellar at both ends of the field landing check after check and making his attackman’s life very difficult. On the offensive end Freehill added a pretty goal off of a great feed from Tim Blue. Blue scored what would be the eventual game winner on a beautiful low to high rip after the defensive unit was able to fight off several last minute chances from the Roughriders.

W:  Fighting Clams 2022 11-4 vs. Denver Elite Silver

Game of the event: The 2022 Clams capped off their summer with a dominant 11-4 win over the #18 seed Denver Elite. After being ranked #22 out of pool play, the Clams took down the higher seed with strong team defense and a lunch pail approach on offense.  The offense exploded for its most goals of the tournament, as Chad Palumbo, Rex Mabbs, Colin Sullivan and Nick Bell put their shoulders down and ran through checks, punishing the Denver Elite defense time and time again.
